Job Opening | Blue Economy Coordinator

Blue Prosperity Fiji (BPF) is a government-led initiative dedicated to supporting healthy oceans, thriving communities, and prosperous economies. Through community consultations, scientific research, and traditional knowledge, BPF aims to sustainably manage 100% of Fiji’s ocean, including the full protection of 30% and the strategic growth of Fiji’s blue economy. The program is driven by a Fiji-based team in partnership with experts from the Waitt Institute, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization providing technical expertise, capacity-building, and funding. The Blue Economy team works to ensure that policy makers and stakeholders understand and can access needed financial and economic benefits related to effective ocean management and conservation.

Position Overview

BPF is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Blue Economy Coordinator to support the Government of Fiji in advancing blue economy and sustainable financing initiatives. This position may be partially housed within the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change, fostering close collaboration with government agencies, BPF and Waitt Institute teams, and key national stakeholders. The coordinator will ensure that blue economy activities align with and enhance existing BPF initiatives and work streams.

 

Position Details:

  • Location: Suva, Fiji

  • Eligibility: Must be a Fijian citizen and fluent in English; fluency in Fijian and/or Fiji Hindi is an advantage

  • Work Environment: Comfortable working cross-culturally within a diverse, U.S.-headquartered team

  • Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours/week), one-year contract with the possibility of renewal

  • Reporting To: BPF Country Manager and Waitt Institute Program Manager

  • Benefits: Eligible for Fijian public holidays and 15 days of paid time off

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Government of Fiji’s engagement with BPF by executing the BPF work plan in collaboration with the Waitt Institute and relevant ministries.

  • Ensure blue economy activities and deliverables advance according to program timelines and are integrated with other relevant program priorities and processes. 

  • Assist in the design and implementation of pilots and projects related to responsible blue economic development, including policy advocacy, sustainable finance, and private sector and markets initiatives.

  • Coordinate with government and other stakeholders on the design, development, and implementation of sustainable financing mechanisms and blue economy projects. 

  • Facilitate private sector engagement with BPF, especially as it relates to blue economy and sustainable finance objectives and work. 

  • Identify and assess opportunities to diversify and sustainably expand economic benefits from ocean-related industries.

  • Conduct research and provide technical guidance on blue economy opportunities such as sustainable tourism, aquaculture, renewable energy, and carbon markets.

  • Collect and analyze economic, environmental, and social data relevant to blue economy initiatives.

  • Build and maintain relationships with government agencies, communities, private sector partners, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

  • Organize and support meetings, advisory groups, workshops, and consultations.

  • Monitor the progress of blue economy initiatives and prepare reports, presentations, concept notes and other materials for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Attend BPF and government meetings to facilitate information sharing, provide technical input, track progress, and ensure action on decisions.

  • Collaborate closely with the communications team to highlight success stories and promote knowledge-sharing.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in marine policy, finance, economics, business, law, political science, or a related field, with a minimum of five years of relevant work experience

  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategies aligned with national and regional blue economy priorities

  • Understanding of sustainable finance mechanisms and familiarity with potential funders

  • Excellent organizational and analytic skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively

  • Experience engaging and supporting government officials and technical staff; familiarity with government protocols is an advantage

  • Demonstrated success working closely with local communities

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate technical content for non-technical audiences

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively within a team

  • Experience with meeting facilitation, stakeholder engagement, report writing, and copy editing

  • Strong commitment to sustainable ocean management and progressive policy development

 

Remuneration

A competitive salary package commensurate with experience will be offered.
