Ocean Use Survey Coordinator

Blue Prosperity Fiji (BPF) is a government-led initiative dedicated to supporting healthy oceans, thriving communities, and prosperous economies. Through community consultations, scientific research, and traditional knowledge, BPF aims to sustainably manage 100% of Fiji’s ocean, including the full protection of 30% and the strategic growth of Fiji’s blue economy. The program is driven by a Fiji-based team in partnership with experts from the Waitt Institute, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization providing technical expertise, capacity-building, and funding.

Position Overview

Blue Prosperity Fiji is implementing an Ocean Use Survey (OUS) to support Marine Spatial Planning and ocean governance.

The Blue Prosperity Fiji Ocean Use Survey Coordinator will serve as key on-the-ground project staff, supporting the planning, coordination, and implementation of survey activities in Fiji. This role will report to the Blue Prosperity Fiji Managing Director and the Waitt Institute Science Manager to ensure field execution, survey target achievement, and timely reporting throughout the implementation period.

Objectives​

  • Provide dedicated in-country coordination and management for Ocean Use Survey implementation

  • Supervise coordination structures to ensure consistent implementation across Fiji

  • Support recruitment, training, and oversight of survey facilitation teams

  • Ensure the approved implementation strategy is executed effectively 

  • Support field logistics, travel coordination, and stakeholder engagement

  • Contribute to survey data quality assurance and reporting outputs

  • Assist with consultation processes, including development of heatmap products and final reporting

  • Support management of key implementation partnerships

 

Project Tasks

  • Implementation Preparation Support

    • Conduct consultations with government agencies, NGOs, communities, and other BPF project collaborators to secure necessary endorsements in advance of project implementation

    • Recruit and hire facilitation teams

    • Support training and preparation of facilitation teams to ensure readiness for deployment

  • Implementation Oversight and Target Achievement

    • Oversee execution of the approved Ocean Use Survey implementation strategy

    • Provide direct supervision and management support to survey facilitators

    • Promote consistency in implementation standards, reporting, and field protocols 

    • Support field teams in addressing operational challenges and maintaining progress toward targets

  • Data Quality Assurance/Quality Control

    • Assist with data QA/QC processes to maintain accuracy and completeness

    • Coordinate with technical staff on resolving data gaps or inconsistencies

  • Heatmap Consultation and Project Reporting Support

    • Support the consultation process around Ocean Use Survey heatmap outputs

    • Provide field-based insights into survey results and stakeholder feedback

    • Assist with development of project reports summarizing findings and progress

  • Communications

    • Draft reports, memos, and project updates as needed

    • Provide timely information to the Blue Prosperity Fiji team and collaborators

Position Details:

  • Location: Suva, Fiji

  • Eligibility: Must be a Fijian citizen and fluent in English; fluency in Fijian and/or Fiji Hindi is an advantage

  • Work Environment: Comfortable working cross-culturally within a diverse, U.S.-headquartered team

  • Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours/week), one-year contract with the possibility of renewal

  • Reporting To: BPF Managing Director and Waitt Institute Science Manager

 

Key Deliverables

  • Attend weekly meetings and communicate regularly with the BPF Managing Director and WI Science Manager regarding project and budget status and operational needs

  • Produce written reports, memos, and updates for Waitt Institute and Blue Prosperity Fiji collaborators

  • Conduct consultations with government agencies, NGO’s, communities, and other BPF project collaborators to secure necessary endorsements in advance of project implementation

  • Support recruitment, hiring, and training of Ocean Use Survey staff

  • Execute effective coordination and oversight of survey implementation, including ensuring consistency in implementation standards, safety protocols, and achievement of project targets

  • Provide field team support for travel, meetings, survey facilitation, and addressing operational challenges

  • Contribute to survey data QA/QC processes as needed

  • Support the heatmap consultation processes and development of survey outputs

Salary and Benefits

The final position title and compensation package will be determined based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.
